THE MED-X PROTOCOL
Nearly all our clients, regardless of specific diagnosis or pain patterns, are placed on the identical MED-X program, as outlined below.
Twice weekly MED-X sessions for four weeks, followed by once weekly sessions for four weeks. Exercise in the back machine takes 120 to 140 seconds and is done to the point of momentary failure. The back strength gains produced are the result of a combined time of approximately twenty-four (24) minutes over eight weeks. There are other exercises which fill-out the program and a full session including those exercises takes approximately 30 minutes.
At the end of twelve sessions, back strength has improved at least 40-50%. This is sufficient to achieve a "threshold" for spinal protection. That strength threshold prevents daily activities from predisposing the spine to further damage. Pain is reduced, usually by 2-3 points and sometimes totally.
We seldom provide additional therapy other than treatment to reduce pain so the client can exercise effectively. Active Spinal Exercise is the total emphasis of our Therapy. At Apple Rehab we are 100% dedicated to MED-X because:
"Therapy is that which works". Strengthening the back muscles works. No other treatment strengthens the back muscles. It follows that no other treatment is "Therapy". If you have not had MED-X treatment, you simply have not received "Therapy" for your back. The very fact that your back still hurts is testimony to that.
We consider providing other treatment to be professionally unsound practice. When one approach works so well, you stick with it. The strength gains and pain reduction produced by the back machine are sustainable, unlike traditional treatments that provide only temporary benefits.
We recommend MED-X graduates of our program continue to use the back machine once monthly to maintain strength levels. We have clients who have continued such a maintenance schedule for as long as sixteen years. They are our best advocates. They know that if it were not for the back machine they would be unable to function anywhere near the level they enjoy. See several examples under "Success Stories" at the end of this website.
